DELIVERING SUSTAINABILITY

DELIVERING SUSTAINABILITY

Renewable energy is not a required standard for milling. As a business we took the decision to invest in renewables in 2015 at this point we set our 20 year reduction targets. To reduce our total energy and water consumption by 20%. Our wind turbine was installed in 2012 and our solar panels installed in 2014.

  • In 2015 we set a 10 year reduction target, to reduce consumption by 20%.
  • As of 2022 we have reduced these measures by 20%.

By 2025, we will publish our next set of targets to commemorate our 350th anniversary.

WE MAP THE ENTIRE CARBON LIFECYCLE OF OUR MANUFACTURING PRODUCTS

Positive Energy for Your Planet refers to the energy consumed during the lifecycle of our animal feed milling, from the point we receive the raw materials at one of our mills through to delivery to our customer.

  • INGREDIENT SOURCING

One of the big misunderstandings of the feed industry is the assumption that UK livestock consumes feed that is grown on land that would otherwise be producing food for human consumption. That is true in some cases but the majority of the ingredients we use are co products that are not suitable for human consumption. Furthermore, they are products that are produced naturally as part of the process of making human food. Wheat for example is the primary product for our milling, the first step in making bread. The co-product produced is wheatfeed which we use a main ingredient. 2/3rds of the ingredients we use are all UK produced.

  • SUSTAINABLE INGREDIENT SOURCING

As of November 2023 we were one of the first UK feed companies to move to deforestation free soya. We were also an early adaptor of the UK Novapro rape meal plant at Stafford and the Vivergo and Ensus bio fuel plants. We will continue to source the most sustainable sources of ingredients wherever and whenever possible.

  • LOCAL DELIVERIES

52% of our customers are within a 40 mile radius of our mills. Once we have delivered our feed to our farmers, we do our best to back-fill loads with raw materials to reduced empty wagons on the roads. We endeavour to buy feeds from customers where we can. Our company cars are Hybrid and Electric vehicles.

  • ENERGY PRODUCTION

We have installed solar at a number of our sites with some more exciting renewable energy projects in the pipeline. Look out for updates soon!

  • 0.001% PRODUCTION WASTE

We reuse or recycle 99.99% of everything we buy. All packaging, from wooden pallets to plastic and paper bags are recycled. Ingredients that are taken out during the manufacturing process are either reworked in to other products or sent to biodigesters to be turned in to energy.

  • RECYCLABLE PACKAGING

99% of our packaging is fully recyclable. Our plastic packaging is made using 30% recycled plastic.
