Your Horse
Every horse is different and therefore every horse needs feeding according to its requirements.

Management - the way in which you keep your horse also affects the feeding requirements. Things to consider are: time stabled, time grazing, quality of feed and exercise regime.

Weight - A horse or pony will eat between 2-2.5% of its bodyweight per day. A simple calculation can be used in order to calculate how much feed is required for your horse:
(Weight (kg) x 2.5)/100

The calculated figure can be split between different feedstuffs (forage, concentrate etc) in order to meet your horse/ponies requirements.

Condition - The condition of your horse/pony will alter throughout their lifetime, and is affected by the type and breeds, therefore it is important to monitor the condition of your horse/pony and take in to consideration the type and breed. Condition Scoring is measuring the amount of fat cover on your horse/pony. Horses and Ponies will tend to store fat over their ribs, backbone and on their rump as well as their neck. In order to condition score your horse/pony correctly you should split your horse in to 4 sections and score out of 5 for each section, then take the average.

Workload - The amount of feed fed should enable your horse/pony to obtain a balanced amount of energy in order to meet their workload. If energy is in excess or deficient then the result will be weight gain or weight loss. The workload of a horse/pony can be split in to 4 categories, maintenance, light, medium and hard.

Feeding Guidelines - when feeding your horse any combination of feedstuff the following guidelines should always be followed:

  • Ensure access to clean, fresh water.
  • Horses are 'trickle feeders', so feed little and often.
  • Feed forage of a high quality to maintain a healthy gut. Forage should make up about 1.5% of the horse/ponies bodyweight..
  • Changes to the animal's diet should be made gradually.
  • Feed should be stored separately to prevent cross contamination.
  • Feed buckets, scoops and utensils should be kept clean.
  • Horses'/Ponies' teeth should be checked regularly to prevent discomfort when eating.
  • Horses/ponies should be wormed regularly.

All Feed recommendations are there as a guideline and should be adapted according to the requirements or your horse/pony.

Follow our simple traffic light system to help find a diet to suit your needs:

  • High Energy (greater than 11.5 MJ/kg
  • Medium Energy ( 10-11.5MJ/kg)
  • Low Energy ( less than 10MJ/kg)
